It was constructed in Eastern Jin Period (AC 317-420). There are many unofficial tales and opinions in the history of Hupao Spring,full of supernatural color. As the legend said, when Prince Zhaoming,the eldest son of Emperor Liangwu in Southern Dynasty came to Nanshan for the first time, he was short of drink water. When the Prince walked on the hillside one day, the song of the wind came up suddenly. One big tiger rushed from the forest. The Prince was startled and quickly got away for hiding. Just in a minute, the tiger leaped forward and stopped just beside the feed of the Prince, and run away with roar after digging a deep pit with its front feet. In an instant, clean water came continually from the pit. The Prince was exultant and then called it as "Hupao Spring" (spring dug by tiger). The spring bottom is three meters deep from the water surface. The water is clean and transparent, no odor, with many kinds of micro mineral substance. It is really a high quality drinking-water source.
