The teachings of eminent monks
are preserved in myths
During the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty, Master Ma Su, the abbot of
Nanshan Helin Temple, was a highly respected monk with a strong sense of Taoism.
He has profound Buddhist knowledge and is also kind-hearted. Both the monks in
the temple and the believers outside the temple like him very much. Due to Ma
Su's unpretentious and approachable nature, he has many followers. When he gave
a lecture at Helin Temple, the audience exceeded a thousand people. Once, he
gave a speech at Helin Temple and many believers came to listen. As he spoke, a
strange rainbow suddenly appeared in the sky, colorful and very beautiful. There
were many cranes hovering and dancing above his head. After a while, countless
bright flowers fell from the sky, landing on his throne and the heads of his
audience. Someone was very surprised and asked him what kind of flower it was.
He replied, "This is what the Buddha world calls' smallpox '. Later, someone
hung a plaque at the place where he spoke, with the four characters "Heavenly
Rain Treasure Flower" written on it, referring to the story of Master Ma Su's
teachings on the heavenly descent of precious flowers.
