Black Lacquer Light Bodhisattva
Black Lacquer Light Bodhisattva, named Faming, was a monk in the Helin Temple in
Nanshan during the Song Dynasty. According to folklore, he was a highly
respected monk with a Taoist practice. One year, there was a severe drought and
not a single drop of rain fell for a long time. Seeing that the crops in the
fields were about to die, the common people tried many ways to pray for rain,
but none of them worked. They were extremely anxious and decided to sacrifice
themselves to pray for rain. He piled up a pile of firewood on an open space in
the temple, lit a fire, and then sat on the bonfire to burn it himself. As
prophesied in mythology, sincerity leads to spirituality. Heavy rain fell from
the sky and lasted for three days and nights before finally stopping. At this
moment, the common people rushed to see Monk Faming sitting in the ashes,
unscathed and burned to a pitch black glow. The common people were deeply moved,
so they sculpted a statue of him in the temple and honored him as the Black
Lacquer Light Bodhisattva.
